Why you pursue something is equally important as what you pursue.

Kyla Sylvers grew up in Chicago, Illinois and quickly realized that storytelling was her passion. From creating full lives for her dolls, or even for the fake people that lived on the neighborhood carpets that she drove her collection of cars on, she always had a story to tell. She would eventually graduate from fake cars and move onto to songwriting, eventually discovering storytelling through the lenses of dancing, acting, & playwriting, as well.

Once she went on to college at the University of Southern California, she not only honed the craft of acting, but she also fell in love with filmmaking and television writing. Her second play was produced there (having already been a Chicago Young Playwrights finalist) and she starred in numerous plays, web series, and films while being there, as well.

During her time at USC, she also studied at the British American Drama Academy, which allotted her the ability to perform on a London stage in a play that made it into the Shakespeare archives thanks to it being the first time the show was ever performed by women!

Once she returned to LA, she also discovered print modeling and the joy it brings her to tell a story through a photo. She continued to perfect her skills as both a stage and onscreen actress. She worked with the homeless who needed help with transitional housing on alternative spring breaks as giving is equally as important to her. She also trained extensively in screenwriting and was a company member of Theatre Unleashed for a brief period.

Despite all of this involvement, she still felt alone, and quickly grew weary of the LA scene.

Once she discovered LA was not for her, she moved to NYC where she has found success as a stage and on-camera actress - booking 4 shows within her first year along with a pilot and two other shows in her second.

She also founded the production company, Melanin & Magic Productions, which has produced, numerous, award-winning productions and screened at multiple festivals. Her current dark-comedy web series, SEX, VLOGS, AND KIDNAPPINGS has amassed over 1,000,000 views on YouTube. Her supernatural horror-thriller, THE BLACK BANSHEE, was chosen to be distributed to over 50 independent cinemas across the U.S. thanks to the Emerging Black Filmmakers Collection that was curated through the NW Film Forum, Full Spectrum Features, the Luminal Theatre, and the Circle Collective. The film also screened at the San Diego Black Film Festival, San Francisco Black Film Festival, New Faces, New Voices Film Festival (Audience Choice Award winner), 1261 Festival, and many more. The film was also featured in an ESSENCE ARTICLE. In addition, the company produced the short drama film, THE WAY OUT, along with the dramedy web series, FINDING OUR WAY.

She was also the recipient of a grant in 2021 that allowed her to stage her solo piece CHOAS AT 26! OR MAYBE ITS NOT SO BAD… in collaboration with Moxie Arts and The Tank Theater in NYC.

As a writer, she was most recently a writer & producer for the WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT ASSOCIATION (WWE) SMACKDOWN BRAND). Her other work includes the sci-fi fantasy pilot, EGATU (available upon request), which has been a SUNDANCE AND MACRO TV LAB FINALIST. Her pilot, THE BLACK BANSHEE, was an ISA TOP 50 FAST TRACK FINALIST and a finalist for TABLE READ MY SCREENPLAY. Her fantasy short film, EVERGREEN has been THE FUTURE OF FILM IS FEMALE semi-finalist, and she has also been an EMERGING YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS FINALIST in Chicago. She is also in pre-production on the revenge family drama, SO YOU CAME TO KILL ME, and the dystopian romance film, ONE LAST TIME.

Her biggest goal in entertainment is to tell stories that matter to her and that both entertain as well as change lives and luckily, by default, all of her work allows her to do that. She also wants to help put black women at the forefront of more narratives as she believes there are so many stories that have yet to be told with them front and center.

She is currently seeking new representation as a writer // actor // director.
